This past weekend we took a spontaneous trip to the Black Forest. Since we have a car now, it's much easier to decide to drive somewhere nearby for the weekend instead of having to plan train/plane rides to get places. We didn't really have any plans for our weekend except for the names of a few cities/mountains to see and we were excited to see what we would find. It ended up being a gorgeous weekend and we had a ton of fun!
We started off driving west toward the Black Forest. We had the name of a hotel in Freiburg which is about two hours from where we live, so we wanted to end up there at the end of the day. According to our map, the first place we would get to was the Titisee. Unfortunately, we never actually found the lake because of a few wrong turns, but we saw it from above while driving and it was gorgeous! We hope to go back there sometime in the summer so that we could actually go in the lake. We then drove a bit farther and found a little suburb of Feldberg that we stopped in. They had a schnapps museum there, but it was too early in the morning for it to be open. We did find this building with pretty flowers outside, so we had to take a picture.
We then kept driving in search of Feldberg which is a mountain with a few lookouts at different places. The scenery was beautiful on the way there!
Once we got to Feldberg, we realized it was a skiing place. There was a bit of snow in the low spots, but not a whole lot. It was quite windy and cold because there was some cloud cover.
There were a lot of people wandering around this area, but we couldn't figure out what there was to see here and where we needed to go to see it. They had some sort of nature museum there, so we went inside and asked about getting to the top of the mountain. The lady there was very helpful and gave us a map and told us how long it would take to get to do different routes on the mountain. Since we wanted to see other places and weren't prepared to do a lot of hiking, we decided to do the shortest route and were well-rewarded on the top.
Here's the entrance to the hiking trail up the mountain.
We had a great view the whole way up of the Swiss Alps even though it was cloudy! The clouds were just high enough that we could still see a long way out and get some great pictures! The trees didn't have leaves on them anymore, but the contrast between the brown trees and the evergreen trees was pretty cool.
At the "top" of the mountain (we didn't actually go to the top, but this was the highest point for where we went) there was a pile of rocks with a man's face on it. Not sure who he was or what it was for.
The coolest part of the "top" of this mountain was the little lake that it overlooked. When we looked down, we could see the Feldsee which is just a small lake/pond at the bottom of the mountain. It was pretty cool because it is basically perfectly round! With the cold air, there was some crazy fog coming off of the lake which added to the beautiful scene.
Since there was bit of snow on the mountain, we had to make sure we got some pictures with our first snow of the year. :)
This only took us until lunchtime on Saturday, but I'll write more about the other places we went over the next few days. Keep checking back!
