Yesterday morning, Brian and I purchased another women's bike! We wanted to have 2 men's bikes and 2 women's bikes so that we had enough when people come to visit us. We had 2 men's bikes because Brian brought his new bike and an old one he had with us from the States. We only had my new women's bike.
Brian was told about a Fahrradmarkt (bike market) by the guys at work. We walked through the pouring rain yesterday morning to a school gym. We weren't really sure what to expect, but it was basically a big school gym with bikes sitting around. Each had a tag with the price on it. You could look at the bikes and try them out inside the gym and then there were lines once you found one that you wanted. It was quite crazy because there were a lot of people and less bikes. We got there only about a half hour after the sale started, but a lot of bikes were already spoken for. A lot of them were kids bikes, but there were a fair amount of adult bikes too.
Here is the bike we found. Definitely not new, but it's in decent shape and it's the right size for me or someone taller to ride it.
When we paid for the bike, Brian wanted me to take the change since I had the wallet. When the lady handed back the money, he pointed to me and said "she'll take it" (in English). The lady immediately said, "You speak English?" in perfect American English. She then asked where we are from and Brian (not thinking) said USA. It hadn't clicked to either of us that she had perfect American English without a German accent until she said, "I know you're from the USA...where?" We then realized that she was probably from there too, so we told her where we are from. We found out that she is from the Rochester, NY area. We never found out why she is here or for how long, but it was nice to stumble upon another American. It doesn't happen that often, but definitely more than I thought it would!
After buying the bike, Brian walked the bike back home in the rain. He had his rain pants and coat on, so he didn't get too wet (except his feet!). I used my umbrella and carried Brian's and had on my rain boots, so I stayed relatively dry.
Yesterday it rained all day and today it has stopped for a little bit and rained much lighter than yesterday, but it's still pretty yucky this weekend.

More Projects!
I've completed a few more projects and am excited to share them!
First, I made lemon bars for our book study last night. I like them, but had never made them before. They were easy to make and turned out pretty good. We had a lot leftover, so Brian took the rest to work today and they were all gone!
Today I finished the stocking hat that I was making for myself! I made one for Brian last winter and decided I should make myself one before it gets too cold this year. Mine went a lot faster because I have much more time on my hands because I'm not in grad school and working. :) Here's the final product!

American Food
Last night was American food night in our apartment. We had good old burgers and fries. Nothing too special, except that we got to eat the first lettuce from our "garden"! Brian wanted lettuce on his burger, so he picked a few leaves of lettuce from our balcony. Here's some pictures of the lettuce leaves and his burger.
The lettuce leaves ready for eating! (onion was not homegrown)
Our yummy burgers - "chester" and gouda cheeseburgers!

Beautiful Sunsets
We definitely live in a beautiful place! We've had a few gorgeous sunsets in the last week or so, but I've only been able to capture one with a picture. Enjoy!

Apartment Updates
We're still in the process of purchasing some things for our apartment, so I thought I'd update you on a few of our more recent purchases and things we've acquired. Brian also told me I had to update the plant pictures because those are a few weeks old by now and our plants are much bigger! Enjoy!
We had quite a few comments about our very bright guest bedroom bedding, so we knew we had to change it (I hated it, too!). A few weekends ago we rode past a bedding place with stuff on sale and found this set for about half off! There's purple sheets underneath.
This kitchen table came from one of Brian's co-workers who recently got married and had too much furniture for their apartment. It's nice to have a small table in the kitchen to eat breakfast at. The aloe plant we bought at the floh markt (flea market/giant garage sale) in FN on Friday night. Her name is Beatrice. :) The clock we bought yesterday and have yet to put our own pictures in. We hope to hang it on the wall, too.
Here's one set of yellow beans. They're huge!
My flowers which were basically non-existent in my last picture.
Our lettuce...just about ready to eat!
The other set of yellow beans.

First Visitor - Becky!
We had our first visitor to FN at the beginning of September for an extended weekend - one of my best friends, Becky. She was in Ireland for a conference, stopped by us for a few days, and then was off to Asia to visit another friend of ours for a few weeks. I'm so glad she added us into the trip because we don't see her often since she's lived in Colorado for the last while and shortly before she moved back to Michigan, we moved to Germany.
The three of us weren't the healthiest bunch while she was here, but we managed to have fun anyway. I was on the last stages of a cold, Brian was right in the middle of a cold, and Becky was just starting to get a cold. We went through lots of Kleenex!
Becky navigated flights, trains, and the ferry to get to us and we were very happy to see her! We learned about how to tell future visitors the best way to get to us. :)
On Saturday, Becky and I made a trip to Pfaender since she had never been to Austria and we live so close. We took the train to Bregenz, Austria and then found our way to the cable car. Instead of taking the cable car, we decided we were going to hike up the mountain instead. This probably wasn't the greatest plan since we were both sniffling quite a bit, but we made it! There was a well-marked path, but it was a bit steeper than we expected. A few spots were a bit slippery because of some mud, but we made it all the way without too much complaining. :)

This is part of the trail.
Such a beautiful mountain to climb!
Once we made it to the top, we had a slightly chilly lunch of kaesespaetzle. I was proud that I could order our lunch all by myself! It took a few times of repeating it to the man before he understood was I was speaking in his language, but we got what we wanted and it was delicious! We then headed to the candy stand. :) This was our reward for climbing the whole mountain. I got lots of gummy things and Becky tried some of the chocolates too. We took a quick trip around the "zoo" while we were up there too.
Us at the top with the Austrian Alps in the background.
We took a slightly different route down that mountain that we hoped would bring us closer to the train station. It sort of did, but we still had to walk through part of the town. We saw some beautiful flowers going both up and down the mountain, but these were my favorite because they looked like mini orchids. Anyone know what they are?
Once we got to the train station, we had to buy our tickets from the counter because I couldn't figure out the Austrian ticket machine, so we ended up having to wait a little bit for our train. We took the opportunity to make sure we got some pictures of Becky that proved she was in Austria since she didn't get a stamp in her passport.
It's Becky in Austria! (Of course she's not covering the word "casino")
Becky and the Austrian flag in Austria.
Becky and the German flag.
Becky and the Swiss flag (but she's been there before).
On Sunday, the three of us took train to Lindau to explore the island city. We walked around the whole island and have a lovely sandwich lunch in the garden there. It was a beautiful day for some walking.
Becky and I on some lounge chairs that I thought were comfortable until I laid down on it.
Brian and I by the fountain in the park.
On Monday, Becky and I were very European and went to get groceries with bikes and backpacks. It was fun to go to the grocery store with someone who hadn't been there before and was still amazed by all the German stuff and not frustrated with it. :) We vegged for quite a bit of the day because we were both pretty sore from all the walking we had done the previous 2 days.
On Tuesday, we waited around the apartment until our boat shipment came in and then she helped to unpack some of it. It was so exciting to get all our stuff! We then headed to McDonald's to do Bible study on Skype with our friend Deb back in Michigan.
Tuesday night, Becky had to leave us because she had to take the last train trip back to Zurich since her flight left in the morning before the trains got there. It meant she had to sit at the airport for a while, but she made it all the way to Asia without any problems even if it did take a while.
It was so nice to have a friend here for a while and someone to speak English with! We can't wait to see her again at Christmas!

Projects to Keep Busy
We've been in Germany for almost 7 weeks now and finally have Internet in our apartment! This means that I can check my e-mail more regularly, listen to WaYfm online, and update the blog more often! It's very nice to not have to walk half an hour to McDonald's just to use the computer, but can rather check things whenever I feel like it.
Since I'm not taking the walks to McDonald's anymore, I have to have things to keep me busy while Brian is at work. I don't have a job here, so I spend most of my days at home doing things around here. I spend quite a bit of time cleaning because the apartment is much bigger than any place we've lived and has hard wood floors that show all sorts of dirt. Besides cleaning, I'm working on some other hobbies that I've been doing for a while and trying some new things. Here's some pictures of what we've been up to.

This is a new checkbook cover for my mom.
She has one just like it, but it's starting to fall apart, so I made her a new one.
A bookmark I made. It's not quite finished because I have to figure out how to do french knots without having them fall out! I have a few more of these types of bookmarks to work on.
This is Brian's project. In the blue bin is our compost bin. The dead plants and leaves are to put in it once they dry out. The bin is pretty full now, so hopefully we will have some dirt soon. We're hoping this will give us dirt so that we don't have to buy any and take it home on our bikes.
We've got some plants growing on our balcony. They not very high-maintenance, so it's not a very busy project. These are yellow beans.
These are the beginning of some flowers...they're much bigger now.
This is lettuce.
More yellow beans.
My most recent project - carrot cake. Brian wanted to bring something to work for his birthday, so I suggested a cake. When I went through the cookbook, Brian picked out the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I had never made a carrot cake before, so it was definitely a process! We had to figure out what all the ingredients were in German and then find them in the grocery store (nothing is where you would expect it here!). I then had to convert things from standard to metric measurements because my recipe was in standard and my ingredients were in metric. Grating 3 cups of carrots is not fun either!
Here's the finished product with cream cheese frosting and marzipan carrots on top.
I hope it tastes good for the guys at work tomorrow!
I've got to finish another bookmark and then Brian would like some knitted mittens. I've never done that before, so I think it will be a bit of a process to do because I have to go buy yarn and needles here.
Watch for more projects because I've got lots of them!

Our Stuff is Here!
A few minutes before 11 this morning, our boat shipment was delivered to our apartment!! We now have our own bikes and I have more things to do. :) The apartment is now a mess because there is stuff and boxes and paper all over, but we feel very blessed to have our stuff again after exactly 7 weeks (they told us 6-8, so we are happy!). All the boxes were still taped shut and nothing was damaged - praise the Lord!

Our Apartment
Since today marks our first visitor to Deutschland (one of my best friends, Becky!), I figured that the rest of you would like to see pictures of our apartment. I spent the last few days cleaning it pretty well and decided that would be a good time to take pictures. :) We're still working on getting some things for it (like curtains and more attractive pillows), but you can at least see where we're living. It's about 110 square meters (which is quite large for Germany and much larger than our last apartment) and we are blessed to have the opportunity to live here.
Welcome to Schmidstrasse 22! Our mailbox in on the bottom left.
Our storage closet is what you see as soon as you come in the door. It's full of junk right now, but will hopefully hold our bikes soon. The stairs down to the left take you to 2 apartments and the laundry room. The stairs up to the right take you to 1 apartment a floor up and 2 apartments on the floor above that. Our door is to the right before the stairs.
Here's our door. The handle doesn't turn, so it locks whenever you shut it. We have to always remember our keys!
The inside of our door. Notice my stylish new rain boots! Much needed here in FN!
To the right when coming in our apartment is the guest bathroom. Here's the toilet and shower.
The other side of the guest bathroom.
The guest bedroom is straight ahead when you come in the apartment.
The guest bedroom closet which Brian has already fixed!
The guest bedroom looking into the hallways. Forgive the insanely bright bedding...it's all that we have so far!
Looking down the hallway when you enter the apartment. The doorway on the right is to the kitchen and straight ahead goes toward the dining/living room area.
This cabinet thing in the hallway has become the key shelf so that we always remember our keys when we leave the apartment. We don't have much in the cupboards because we don't have anything to put in it.
The kitchen from the hallway. Those are towels hanging on the curtain rods, not curtains.
Our freezer and trash corner. Germans are really picky about trash and everything has a particular spot. The freezer is about the same size as our refrigerator.
One side of the kitchen. The cabinet with the metal strip along the top is actually our dishwasher. They hide everything to look like cabinets, but it opens like a regular dishwasher.
The other side of the kitchen. The cabinet second from the right and second from the bottom is our refrigerator. The cabinet on the far right opens as one and holds our cleaning supplies.
The living/dining/tv room. This is the part that makes the apartment seem huge! The kitchen/door hallway is directly to the left after the desk and the master bedroom/bathroom hallways is the door you see behind the green couch.
The desk is in the dining room. We hope to use it more once we have Internet in our apartment!
The dining room. The desk is to the right of this picture.
The sitting area. This couch needs new pillows! The doorway in the background goes into the kitchen.
The TV area. We don't watch much TV because the only thing in English is CNN. We have watched a whole season of MASH that my sister gave us. :)
The rest of the TV room.
The windows to the balcony. We are borrowing two bikes from other ex-pats that are here. The window on the right opens like a door to go out to the balcony.
One half of the balcony. The grill works and we are very happy to have one again!!
The other half of the balcony. That couch is disappearing because it is all ripped and gross. We're growing beans, lettuce, and flowers. We've started a compost bucket.
The left side of the yard. Several cars park down there and this patio is for the tenant below us.
The right side of the yard. This patio belongs to the other tenant below us and she has an awning that pulls out that she doesn't want us dropping cigarettes on. :)
The view from our balcony. We can watch tennis games whenever we want. The line of trees prevents us from seeing the lake, but it is on the other side of them.
Here's the master bedroom hallway. The first door on the right is our bedroom, the second door on the right is the bathroom, and the door at the end of the hallway is a storage closet.
The "dresser" in the hallway. We don't really have anything in it, but plan to put sweaters and sweatshirts in it. I use the mirror/shelf to do my hair because the mirrors in the bathroom are too high for me to see myself in.
The storage closet. These gold lamps used to be all over the apartment, but I think they're ugly so I put them in the closet. We have overhead lighting, so we don't need them.
Our bedroom. Notice the two mattresses (yuck!).
The bedroom looking toward the hallway. The wardrobe has some shelves and some hanging and is actually pretty nice.
The master bathroom is bigger than our office was in our last apartment. Our dryer is in here, but you have to shut the door and open the windows when you run it because it makes so much heat/humidity.
Here's the sinks/shelves. The only counter space is this little shelf below the mirrors.
Here's the toilet, bathtub, and shower. The shower thankfully has a normal faucet that hangs from the wall.
Here's the bathroom looking toward the door.
I hope you enjoyed this tour of our apartment! We'd love to have visitors anytime so that you can see it for yourself!
