Henry Ford Estate

Yesterday, Brian's friend Nick was here for a quick visit, so we decided to check out a free museum through the library. We went to the Henry Ford Estate on the campus of University of Michigan Dearborn. This is a house that Henry Ford had built in one year for his family. It included a large house and a Powerhouse complete with generators to provide all the electricity needed to run the house. The Fords also put a lot of work and thought into the landscaping of the property. The house sits on the Rouge River and had many things to explore. Enjoy the slide show!

Operation Caterpillar Rescue

This evening, Brian and I went for a Rollerblade ride at one of the local Metroparks. We were moving along quite nicely until I noticed one of the creatures pictured above in the middle of the path. Since I think caterpillars are rather cute and this one was especially cute because it was fuzzy, I decided to help it out by moving it off the path into the grass to avoid squishage by any number of passing rollerbladers, bicyclists, walkers, or runners.

Needless to say, this caterpillar was not the only one in danger. We stopped quite often in our figure eight trip around the Metropark to rescue these unsuspecting caterpillars. We probably saved 10-15 caterpillars in the hour we were on the trail.

When we got home, I wanted to find a picture of the caterpillars that we had rescued and have now since discovered that the caterpillars I chose to rescue are actually tent caterpillars that can do quite a bit of damage to trees and bushes. At this point, I'm not sure we did the right thing for the trees, but at least we prolonged the life of another of God's creatures, the tent caterpillar.

Still Growing...

Our plants are still growing! Some of them are getting pretty large, so we're going to be transplanting a few of them into used juice containers to give them some more room. Here's the latest pictures.
In other news, Brian has played his first two church softball games. Both games were wins for our team and Brian hit the ball every time he got up to bat. I'll be glad for some earlier games (these first two were at 9:30) so that there might possibly be a few more fans in attendance.

At the library where I work, we were given a Picturing America grant which comes with a bunch of books and posters and other materials. Tomorrow night we're having an open house to display the books that come in the collection. If you're near Allen Park, stop by for some free ice cream!
