Rhine Falls

This past Saturday, Brian and I decided to go check out Rhine Falls.  It was a beautiful day and perfect for seeing a waterfall.  The Rhine Falls is the "largest" waterfall is Europe, which really just means it's the widest waterfall and definitely not the tallest.  It was pretty impressive though because there were a lot of rocks that the waterfall went over and lots of water going over!  Since we went in winter, there probably wasn't as much water as there would be in summer, but it was still quite impressive!

We found a place to park and then headed down to the waterfall.  There were trails on the side of a hill with a castle on the top of it.  It was pretty impressive how they had built the trails and the viewing platforms on the side of the hill.

Here is part of the castle on the hill.  I would love to live there with the view of the falls!

There was a glass-sided elevator that you had to take back up to the top of the hill to get to the exit.  I did not like the elevator at all!  It was very high!

Through the bottom of the hill, there was a train track.  It went over the river on the bridge at the top of the falls.

Here's our first view of the falls!

I was a little nervous about the platform to stand on to see the falls because there was a lot of water beating down on the support!  Brian then told me it was metal and not wood, so I was much better then.

There were some pretty awesome rainbows over the falls, so Brian had to get my picture with one of them.

Here's the top of the falls with the train bridge over the river.

There was this random sign out in the middle of the top section of the falls with 2 different dates on it.  We went through the museum, but it never said what the dates were for.  Perhaps I will have to do a bit of research to figure out what they were for.

We then walked across the train bridge and walked to the other side of the falls and down to the bottom where you could see the whole falls from straight on.  In the summer, there are boats that take people to the rocks in the middle of the fall and allow you to walk to the top of the big rock.  Since we were there in February, the boats were not running.

We then walked to another castle that was at the bottom of the falls and saw tons of fish in the water!  The birds weren't bothered by all the fish in the water and the fish weren't bothered by the birds.  We're not sure what kind of fish they were, but there were a lot of them!

After we had seen enough of the falls, we decided to do a bit of hiking along the river.  There were loops of trails going each direction from the falls, so we walked both loops in the afternoon.  It was wonderful to be able to do some hiking in February and not have to worry about cold or snow!  We are definitely getting spoiled by this spring-like weather we've been having lately.
