Passive Agressive Library Signs

I know this is a blog of what Brian and I are up to, but sometimes I have to slip in a little library humor.  This link was sent to the SLIS listserv by one of the SLIS professors and definitely deserves reposting.  #16 is my personal favorite.

New Challenge

Brian and I have undertaken a new challenge in our lives that will commence (to some point) on May 8.  We have both decided to run in the Fifth Third River Bank Run in Grand Rapids.  I am definitely NOT a runner, so this is definitely a challenge for me.  In the hopes of being more in shape and healthy, we have started running a bit for exercise.  In order to give me some motivation, Brian suggested that we run in the race in order to have something to work toward instead of just my own motivation (which isn't always so good).  Since deciding to do this, I have been running more in the hopes of being able to run the race faster than I can now.

Brian will be running the 10K which is about 6.2 miles and I will be running the 5K which is about 3.1 miles.  Brian is naturally more athletic than I am, so it is no wonder that he is doing a longer distance than me.  This is the first race for both of us.

The 5K begins at 7:30 am and the 10K begins at 8:00 am.  Unfortunately, we won't be able to watch each other run, but we will be able to celebrate together at the end when we've both completed the race.  I'm looking forward to that, but definitely not the early start time!

We continue to try to run more to get the experience we need and running in different places to get different types of terrain in.  We mostly run at our apartment complex and the Metropark near our apartment.  These are both easy places to mark our distances to see how fast we've run them.

I hope to be able to complete the 5K in under 30 minutes, but so far I have only done 3 miles at 30:23.  I have to add a little more distance on and make it a little faster to reach this goal.  I've got a few more weeks before the race, so hopefully a little discipline on my part can make this happen.

We'll update how things went after the race and if you get the GR Press, you may even see our names in there on May 9!

Visit from Katie

The past few days brought a visitor from Grand Rapids - my sister, Katie!  She drove over here Thursday night after work and we went out to Applebee's to celebrate the fact that I am done with the work for my master's degree.  I had a very yummy blondie!

On Friday, we left in the morning to drive to Midland to see Grandma Jo and Fred.  It had been a while since Katie had seen them and wanted someone to come with her, so I offered to go.  We got there just before lunch time.  Our Uncle Don stopped by for a few minutes, so we were able to see him.  We then went to lunch at Taco Bell and Grandma bought us a special treat of cinnamon twists!  After lunch we went to the Dow Gardens to see their butterfly exhibit.  While we were there, we saw 16 of the 58 different types of butterflies that they had.  I even held one on my finger!  We took a picture with my phone, but I have no way of getting it from my phone to my computer.  :(  After we saw the butterflies, we went out for ice cream at Pizza Sam's in downtown Midland.  We spent the afternoon at Grandma's house and saw all the quilts that she has made for her future great-grandchildren.  Our cousin Lisa came over for dinner and it was good to see her again!    After dinner we drove back to Belleville where I beat both Katie and Brian in a good game of Settlers.  :)

Today we did a little bit of shopping at stores that are on this side of the state, but not on the west side of the state.  We went to REI and got Brian a new pair of running shorts and me a pair of running socks.  Katie got new shoes.  We then went for a celebratory lunch at P.F. Chang's in honor of my being done with graduate school (much rejoicing is needed!).  After lunch, we went to Trader Joe's.  We ended up with some bread, curry sauce, and dried apricots.  Once we got home, Katie left to go back to Grand Rapids.  It was great to have her here for a few days!

After Katie left, we drove over to the Apple store in Ann Arbor and Brian got a new iPod touch since his screen has been having problems for a little while.  Instead of offering to fix it, they just gave him a new one!  He now has to put everything back onto it, but at least he's not afraid of his breaking.  We played with the iPad a little bit too while we were there.  I like the iBook section of this, but I'm not sure we can justify spending that kind of money anytime soon!

Stocking Cap for Brian

After Christmas, we visited my Grandma Jo in Midland.  While we were there, she gave me a pattern for knitting a stocking cap.  She had made one for my dad and I really liked the pattern.  On our way out of Midland, we stopped at Joann's to get some knitting needles and yarn.  Brian really wanted a hat, so he picked out black yarn and I also got some gray yarn for myself.  This past week, I finally finished the hat and Brian can actually wear it while it's still cold out!  I'm not sure that mine will be made this winter, but at least I already have the yarn to use for it.  I had to take some pictures to send to my grandma, so I thought you would enjoy seeing them too.
