Safely in Germany

Guten morgen!

Well, I have made it safely to Germany! I was only an hour late due to only 2 runways being open in Frankfurt due to winds. We were the 32nd plane in the list to takeoff! The rest of the flights were on time and hassle free, so there is definitely nothing to complain about! I didn't sleep as much on the flights as I had hoped, so I was exhausted once I finally got to Friedrichshafen!

Last night I saw a bit of the village that we are staying in. It is a small farming village and smells faintly like manure and apples. It is apple season and everyone here grows apples! I met the landlord and he was very nice! His name is Gott and he speaks fairly decent English. He struggles a bit to find the exact words he's looking for, but he gets his point across very well. He told us about a few restaurants in the town since we wanted to go out to eat.

Yesterday was Brian's birthday, so we decided to go out to eat. It was quite an adventure! Since this is a small village, there are no English menus and no one speaks a whole lot of English. Since Brian and I don't speak German, it was very interesting to order dinner! Drinks were easy to order - water and beer. Nothing too difficult there except that my water ended up being bubbly water which is not my favorite. For dinner, we just pointed at something on the menu and found out what they brought us! Mine ended up being two bratwurst with potato salad. It was very good, although a lot of food! Brian's was bread with ham, cheese, and egg on top. There also was a little "salad" with it. This was a piece of lettuce with cut up carrots and cucumbers on top. We both liked our meals and were pleased that our first attempt at ordering food on our own was a success!

Today I am in the flat by myself while Brian and Lawrence are at work. I worked on picking up our bedroom (since my stuff kind of just got chucked in there last night!) and once I'm done here, I have to work on a bit of schoolwork. Tonight we are going out for beers with the guys that Brian works with for his birthday. It will be nice to be around people who can speak English, but can also order in German for us!

This weekend we hope to go to Dachau (the concentration camp) and Munich. Brian has a friend who now lives in Munich, so we hope to stay by him. We'll get to experience a bit of Oktoberfest which will be very interesting! I'm looking forward to it! Stay tuned for more tales of our adventures!

Off to Germany!

I thought I would put a little update here since the trip to Germany has begun! Brian made it there safely a week and a half ago and has been thoroughly enjoying his time there (despite the work he has to do!). I'm leaving this afternoon to join him for 3 weeks. I'm eagerly looking forward to this so I don't have to live on my own for a while. I hope to be updating this blog and Facebook while we are there, so please look both places for pictures and stories of our adventures!
